8 Prayers – Poems – Lovely Exercises

Texts for Contemplation, Deepening and Spiritualization

You can’t take luggage into the afterlife, can you?
I suggest that each person particularly intensively explores and spiritualizes one particular prayer, text or poem for themselves. Why don´´ t you feel inside of yourself and look for the spiritual text you are affected to the most.

Gods:

For Christians, the Lord’s Prayer offers itself first and foremost. I consider this particularly suitable because it has already experienced deepening on various levels within any Christian.

Vajra level: There’s the possibility for regular contemplation of the content, meaning, connections and logic.

Ratna level: There’s the possibility for delighting in the splendor and brilliance of the images and details as deepening it.

Padma level: Praying so fervently that tears come – that’s a very good step in the wright direction, a useful method of spiritualization.

Karma level: Of course there’s also the possibility of internalizing several more and different texts, if you’re the type for that. This isn’t necessarily a mistake.

Buddha level: And there’s also the possibility the emphasis on the magic and power of euphony. Just enjoy the beauty and wonderful sound and phrasing of your prayer.

I personally find the prayer suggestions in the appendix of the Evans-Wentz edition of the Tibetan Book of the Dead completely useless for new Western Buddhists.

I would like to recommend my readers to start searching for some text, ritual, ceremony or Mass that feels well. For which texts, for which Bodhisattvas, protector deities, or meditation Buddhas does your heart open? That’s what matters! It must touch and inspire you, otherwise you’ll never spiritualize and internalize it deeply enough – beyond brain and heart, so to say.

I’d like to offer just a few suggestions at this point:

Destinations:

The most popular destination for rebirth is Sukhavati, the land of Buddha Amitabha:

Prayer for Rebirth in Sukhavati

From here – the land of the sublime Buddha Shakyamuni –
in western direction beyond countless worlds –
as countless many different lands and levels as there are grains of sand in the Ganges –
there lies Sukhavati, the land of the truthful and luminous Buddha.
Sukhavati, land of pure bliss, flawless, indefinite in direction and distance!
Ground and soil are even like the sand on a beach and without obstacles, like the surface of a hand
Covered with gold, silver, copper and jewels.
Inviting and beautiful, adorned with billions of colorful, delicate flowers and blossoms.
Here in this land of ever-renewing glory,
here resides Buddha Amitayus, Infinite Life,
Teacher of gods, humans and demons,
surrounded by hosts of dakinis, dralas, angels, elves and warriors in magnificent robes.
In deepest depth and affection I vow to spare no effort to overcome all confusions!
May I and all other living beings be reborn in this luminous, pure and immaculate state!

Protectors:

Or how about imploring the Bodhisattva Kshitigarbha, to whom I personally feel a very special closeness, for example:

There’s a beautiful supplication composed by Mipham Rinpoche:

Wonderful Ornament of the Earth

Revered Kshitigarbha, nature of the earth, who nourishes all beings,
Just as the ground beneath us, you strengthen and sustain many similar fundamental phenomena.
Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, you fulfill the hopes of the three worlds.
Master of the ten bhumis, to you be honor, praise and gratitude.

You lead us step by step, by manifesting all worlds of the Blessed One,
Just like that which sustains and nourishes the earth and, growth and harvest,

  • this world full of wealth and diverse treasures –
To you – highest deity of the earth – be honor, praise and gratitude.
